Best practice workshop on „DATA handling" on Monday, 10 February 2025 from 10-12 am.
Best Practice
- Good Scientific Practice for Research Software Engineering
(Jens Saak) --> Link: https://gwp-rse-ff130b.pages.gwdg.de/en/ - How to use Labfolder? - An example case (Stefanie Duvigneau)
- Enhancing Reproducibility using Workflows (Pavan Veluvali) --> https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.00028
- MARDI-Station (Jens Saak)
After the presentations, we will discuss key points in the World Café session in small groups.
We look forward to broad participation from different groups and perspectives: lab technicians, group data officers, PhD students, postdocs, group leaders — everyone is welcome, and no registration is needed!
Some ideas for world café session:
- Data management plan: How can we fulfill the DFG's requirements? What were the biggest challenges?
- File storage: How and where do we store our data? Who do we share it with and how do we find it again?
- Labfolder: How do we structure a labbook project? Entries, templates, co-working, integration of measurement data, etc.
- FAIR Data: How to create a FAIR data set? What does it look like?
- Feel free to share further best practices!

We just wrapped up our event with 30 participants, diving into key questions on data ownership, licensing rights, and the challenges of using different data search functions—none of which have straightforward answers!
A few takeaways:
✅ A dedicated FAQ on Research Software Engineering helps navigate common pitfalls (https://gwp-rse-ff130b.pages.gwdg.de/en/).
✅ There are (more or less effective) FAIR-checkers (https://fair-checker.france-bioinformatique.fr/).
✅ Labfolder can be used to maintain an overview table of all experiments (including IDs!) . Labforward
✅ And let’s not forget—data is the gold of our time (just look at the Super Bowl, https://operations.nfl.com/gameday/analytics/big-data-bowl/).
Looking forward to more discussions during #LoveDataWeek and to exploring the MaRDI-Station!
